Additive manufacturing: a revolution in the manufacturing industry

We recently had the privilege of sharing our vision of additive manufacturing and its impact on the manufacturing industry, through an article published by Cscience and written by Priscilla Freschu. This emerging technology is redefining production standards and opening up vast horizons of opportunity for companies worldwide. The evolution of additive manufacturing This interview with Priscilla Freschu highlighted several crucial aspects of additive manufacturing. Additive manufacturing, also known as 3D printing, has come a long way since its beginnings as a tool primarily used for rapid prototyping. Thanks to ongoing advances in materials, processes and manufacturing techniques, it is now capable of producing high-quality, high-precision final parts. The challenges and opportunities of additive manufacturing Integrating additive manufacturing into a company is not without its challenges. Nétur emphasized the crucial importance of part quality, materials management and optimization of manufacturing parameters. These challenges are all opportunities for companies to become more ingenious and innovative.Additive manufacturing excels at producing complex parts, offering significant advantages over traditional manufacturing methods. Is sustainability compatible with additive manufacturing? Nétur underlined the growing importance of sustainability in the manufacturing industry. Additive manufacturing plays a crucial role in reducing material waste, customizing production and encouraging continuous innovation. This sustainable approach is essential if companies are to remain competitive in the global marketplace while respecting the environment. A concrete project To illustrate the concrete impact of additive manufacturing, Nétur shared the example of the RE-101 project, a hybrid rocket engine in collaboration with Reaction Dynamics. Thanks to metal additive manufacturing, this project enabled a significant reduction in production costs and lead times.  This success story clearly demonstrates the revolutionary potential of additive manufacturing in sectors as demanding as aerospace. Nétur uses 3D printing to boost competitiveness

Interview LesAffaires In 2018, Nétur, which specializes in the manufacture of high-precision aerospace parts, made a strategic decision to invest in 3D printing to improve its competitiveness. The company acquired three printers costing $1 million each, under the supervision of McGill University professor Mathieu Brochu, who specializes in materials engineering. The first printer produces aluminum parts, while the other two are dedicated to Inconel, an alloy with a high nickel, chromium or cobalt content. Nétur has made significant savings thanks to 3D printing, with a reduction of around 20% in the amount of metal used. This additive approach has also strengthened proximity to the Quebec supply chain, offering stability in the face of fluctuating prices for materials such as Inconel and titanium. Investments in 3D printing are designed to increase Nétur’s competitiveness in the marketplace, enabling the company to target new customers and expand into new market segments. Stéphane Turcotte, President of Nétur, emphasizes the cutting-edge expertise required in this field. Since its inception, the company has never ceased to evolve, making its mark on the industry through its commitment to excellence and innovation. Let’s take a look back at the key moments that have shaped four decades of success. A solid founding heritage In 1978, Usinage Nétur ltée was founded by Louis-René Turcotte, laying the foundations for a company dedicated to excellence. From our earliest years, we’ve strived to push the limits, and this marked the beginning of a history rich in achievements. Growth and expansion 1984 saw the expansion of our horizons with the enlargement of our building, followed in 1994 by the achievement of ISO 9001 accreditation, underlining our commitment to international quality standards. The turn of the millennium was marked by AS9100 accreditation in 2001, a crucial standard in the aerospace industry. In 2007, Stéphane Turcotte took over, bringing dynamic leadership that has propelled Nétur to new heights. New Identity, new facilities 2012 marked an important chapter with the transformation into Nétur Inc, a new image, and the move to a larger building. In 2014, the conversion of an old building into a multi-purpose factory strengthened our logistics and reduced our dependence on subcontractors. Internationalization and Diversification 2016 was marked by the achievement of ISO14001 accreditation and the prestigious title of Gold Supplier awarded by UTC. Our international expansion took off in 2017 with the establishment in Poland, closely followed by the start of Polish production in 2019. In 2020, ISO9001 and AS9100 accreditations strengthened our presence and commitment in Poland.
